Balancing work life of an employee

  • Work-life balance has been defined.

  • Work life balance is a technique that assists employees in balancing their personal and professional lives. Work life balance encourages individuals to prioritize their time and maintain a balance by allocating time to family, health, vacations, and so on, in addition to establishing a career, business trips, and so on. It is a significant notion in the business sector since it helps to encourage employees and strengthens their loyalty to the organization. (mbaskool,2019)

Simple measures to preserve an employee's work-life balance
According to Pingboard 2020, the following measures may be performed by a business to ensure an employee's work-life balance.

  • Keep Structural Consistency
  • It is critical to retain a feeling of consistency and organization in your company structure since employees feel less anxious when they know what to expect on a daily basis as much as feasible. Don't be hesitant to spice things up now and again, but a consistent and dependable work environment may help employees cope with stress at home.
    Provide Opportunities for Community Engagement
Another excellent strategy to bridge the gap between work and leisure is to provide meaningful and valuable community participation activities.

  • Allow for scheduling flexibility.

  • Because not every firm is well-suited for a remote workforce, don't jeopardize your company's efficiency if you require your staff to appear to work in person. Giving your workers the opportunity to work remotely when they truly need to due to an emergency that demands them to make up time later is something altogether else.
For example, if an employee's child is ill, consider allowing her to work from home that day or come into the office over the weekend to make up for lost time. This way, your employee won't have to worry about missing work or losing pay while on leave, and your company's deadlines will still be reached.

  • Participate in Team-Building Activities

  • Team Building may seem too clichéd for your workplace, but some of them actually build a much-needed spirit of teamwork in the workplace. If your workers believe they can rely on one another for assistance, they will feel as if they have someone to turn to when they are anxious or overwhelmed.

  • Vacations should be encouraged.

  • Many firms still adhere to the traditional norm of two weeks of vacation each year, but research and polls have revealed that 14 days off per 365 days in the year is just insufficient to establish work-life balance. Employees at small businesses and emerging start-ups are frequently under the most pressure to work every day without consideration for personal leisure or self-rejuvenation.
Allow for short breaks throughout the day.
On a lesser scale, regular breaks throughout the day are critical for workers' mental and physical wellbeing. The human body was not built to sit motionless and look at a screen for eight hours, and doing so can result in a number of health problems. Taking pauses at work also improves employee performance since it allows them to be more focused, less worn out, and more productive in the long run.

  • Allow Unpaid Leave for Life Events

  • Some life events warrant paid time off, but others are a little more tricky. Consider your workers' emergency family requirements as well as their desire to improve themselves.
For example, you might provide unpaid leave for events that do not qualify under the Family and Medical Leave Act, such as assisting in the care of a parent suffering from a serious illness or extending maternity leave for a few months following the birth of a child. You may also want to provide unpaid leave to valuable workers who want to go graduate school or are considering transferring to a different location for a spouse's career.

  • Seek Advice from Employees

  • Who better to consult about what your office's employees genuinely require than the employees themselves? If you suspect that your workers are dealing with work-life balance, ask them what adjustments in the workplace could be beneficial. You could be shocked by what you hear and, as a consequence, work on some mutually beneficial tactics.
Consider holding frequent planned meetings, either as a group or as one-on-one chats, to explore balancing concerns, which can often be difficult to bring up. Depending on the size and particular requirements of your staff, these meetings might be held periodically, semi-annually, or yearly.

  • Be a Good Balance Model

  • Nobody wants to hear life advise from a hypocrite, so be sure your words and actions match. If your company's management reply to emails while on vacation, it sends the message to workers that they, too, are expected to do so. Respect your workers' balance and privacy by not calling them beyond normal business hours unless it is an absolute necessity.

  3. “Work Life Balance isn’t only about families and childcare. Nor is it about working less. It’s about working smart. About being fresh enough to give all you need to both work and home, without jeopardising one for the other. And it’s a necessity for everyone, at whatever your stage in life” (Department of Trade and Industry, 2001).
